Crazed Fan Stalks Enya

John Kierans

The Mirror (London, England); 28 March 1996

MILLIONAIRE pop queen Enya is being hounded by a love-crazed fan.

The terrified beauty has told friends: "I'm worried about my safety."

The stalker, a 31-year-old Italian, is completely obsessed by the singer.

He has sent her a written proposal, promising life as "an endless honeymoon".He moved to Dublin a year ago to be near her, and since has:

BRAGGED to everyone: "I'm going to marry her".

SWAGGERED around the city with a framed photo of the singer on a chain round his neck.

RECORDED an album of love songs dedicated to Enya.

TRACED her parents' bar in her home town of Gweedore in Donegal.

BOMBARDED Enya with love letters telling her she's the world's sexiest woman.

In one he wrote: "My adored Enya, I desire with all my heart to become your faithful and loyal husband, the man who shall be eternally at one with you in an endless honeymoon."

Police know the unwanted suitor hangs around outside Enya's Dublin penthouse apartment.

The dark-haired singer, who is one of the richest women in the Britain, always was a very private person. She is rarely seen in public and hasn't got a boyfriend.

But friends say that the pest has made her a prisoner in her own home and turned her into a virtual recluse.

She goes to desperate lengths to avoid her shadow, even disguising herself to walk down the street.

"She's terrified the guy will do something silly," said a pal. "She's told us he's making her life hell. It's one thing having an admirer, but it's another having a stalker."

Enya has made a fortune from worldwide album sales and earns more than any other Irish woman except Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries.

Note: Book of Days: Ah yes, it's The Mirror! One of the UK's noisiest tabloids, you have to wonder where they get their information from, or how many pints of Guinness it takes for a Mirror reporter to embellish the facts. However, Enya was stalked by a mad Italian in 1996-97 and he did cause trouble at the family pub in Donegal.
