in Her Ivory Tower

Enya is worth over €100m — but she steers clears of the headlines, reports Cormac Looney
RECLUSIVE Enya has made a habit of shunning the spotlight, despite being one of the world’s biggest-selling recording artists.
On the rare occasion that the 43-year-old singer makes the headlines, it’s usually over a planning issue at her high-security Killiney home.
But she also hit the headlines when she was the victim of a crazed Italian stalker.
The love-crazed man trailed her for more than a year and even stabbed himself when he was thrown out of her parents’ Donegal pub.
He bombarded her with love letters, recorded an album of love songs dedicated to her and walked around Dublin with a framed picture of her hanging from his neck.
Perhaps it was an attempt to gain access to some of her reputed €100m fortune.
Stalkers and millions are all a long way from the star’s rural upbringing in Gweedore, Co Donegal, where she was born Eithne Ni Bhraonain in 1961.
She hailed from a musical family -her grandparents and parents were prominent local musicians and Enya and her siblings were groomed for music careers from their early years.
In 1980, Enya joined Clannad, the band composed of her siblings Maire, Pol, and Ciaran.
Leaving the band in 1982, she embarked on her solo career, and her major breakthrough occurred in 1988 with the Watermark album and the huge hit Orinoco Flow.
Since then she has released a series of other albums, each as hugely selling as the last, earning her tens of millions.
All the while she has maintained her secluded lifestyle in south county Dublin.
She is single, has no children, although she has said that her nieces and nephews make up for this.
There are rumours that the singer has been working on a new album lately, due for release in November, but she recently moved to quash these reports.
In the meantime, her various planning moves continue to keep her in the headlines.
In June she received the green light for a change to the entrance to her imposing Killiney residence.
Previously known as Ayeshia Castle, she recently changed the name to Manderley Castle.
